This essay is one of the papers which was presented at the symposium for “The Status and Prospects of North Korean Performing Arts” jointly held by the Society for Korean Historico-Musicology and the Korean National University of Arts on 26th Oct., 2001. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the recent trends of culture and arts policy in considering the reign ideology by the North Korean ruler, Kim Chŏng-il, son of Kim Il-sŏng. This paper includes such topics as 1) Introduction, 2) Recent Trends of North Korean Society through Newly Made Words in the Fields of Reign, Government, and Economy, 3) Recent Trends and Prospects of Culture and Arts Policy in North Korea, 4) Conclusion. In conclusion, the author emphasizes that the trends of culture and arts policy in North Korea must be considered on the basis of the new thought movement, i.e. the establishment of strong and great nation 강성대국 appeared in an editorial article of the government newspaper Rodong shinmun ꡔ로동신문ꡕ(2001.1.9).
