This study deals with the removal of mercuryspecies using a packed-bed column with spherical aminatedchitosan material. These adsorbents revealed a high adsorptioncapacity for mercury species. Experiments with feed solutionsof 10 ppm Hg dissolved in distilled water showed anexcellent removal with a sharp increase of the filter effluentconcentration after a total throughput of 900 bed volumes offeed water. Up to 95% desorption was reached by using 3 bedvolumes of 0.01 N EDTA solution. EDTA could be recoveredby means of sulfuric acid with about 75% efficiency. Almostthe same results were obtained in repeated sorption anddesorption experiments at identical conditions. The experimentsdemonstrated that the sorbents possessed practically nosorption capacity for alkaline earth ions (Ca2+ and Mg2+). Theirinfluence on the sorption of mercury was negligible. Inexperiments with spiked tap water of the Karlsruhe ResearchCentre and a feed mercury concentration of 0.01 mg/l, thebreakthrough of Hg was observed only after a total throughputof about 6,000 bed volumes of feed water.
