An effective beam width model, in which the actual slab is replaced with a beam element, is commonly used in design to model the lateral load response of flat plate structures. In this model, the beam element has a thickness equal to that of the slab, and an effective beam width equal to some fraction of the slab transverse width. Many techniques to obtain the effective beam width based on elasticity have been proposed. However, the application of these methods are limited to the slab connected to the columns. A parametric study on slab-vertical member connections is performed using a finite element technique. In the study, a vertical member's rectangularity, whose effects have been commonly ignored in previous studies, is mainly considered. Based on the numerical results, the methods for calculating the elastic effective beam width of the slab connected to vertical members, including structural walls, with various rectangular cross-section are developed. The proposed methods can more precisely predict the lateral stiffness of flat plate structures than previous analysis methods.
