In high-rise building projects, tower cranes play very important role for hoisting construction resources. Usually, tower crane planning has been prepared by field personnels based on their intuitions and experiences, which may cause the inefficiency in crane operation. This research develops a tower crane planning process including selecting cranes, calculating the number of tower cranes and locating each tower crane. The proposed process is composed of three sub-processes. The first sub-process creates the combinations of capability of cranes, the total amounts of cranes, and the proper location of each crane. The second sub-process evaluates if each combination can be applied to the project considering that the allocated resources and planned transportations must be carried out on schedule. The combinations satisfying the constraints are accepted as alternatives. The third sub-process evaluates each alternative according to factors such as cost effectiveness, completion within the duration, the efficiency of tower cranes and interference between cranes and activities. An index for each alternative is calculated, and the alternative that has the highest value of the index is selected as an optimum solution.
