Due to the complex nature of a modern tall building consisting of thousands of structural members, the traditional trial-and-error design method is generally highly iterative and very time-consuming. The objective of this study is to present an design method for the optimal cross section design of tall concrete buildings. The design method can be only applied in the concrete buildings which consist of the square cross sections of column and rectangular cross sections(width:height=2:3) of beam. The method is developed for the minimum weight design of lateral-resisting concrete frames of fixed topology subject to constraints on interstory drift. An optimization method has been developed to find the minimum weight design of building structures. In this paper, emphasis is placed particularly on the practical applicability of optimization method in engineering practice. The structure is optimized through element optimization under the floor level constraints. Several examples are included to demonstrate the efficiency and the usefulness of the proposed method.
