The purpose of this study on urban growth is to reconsider whenever greenbelt areas, which have been set in Busan metropolitan city since 1971, have affected its growth. An other reason is to consider whether it such areas suit the purpose of preventing disorderly urban expansion and protecting the environment.In the study, Cellular Automata are introduced to simulate the growth of Busan metropolitan city. Both fuzzy set conception and AHP are applied for the efficiency of spatial analysis. The land prices, population data and the other factors are used to create exact simulation. Urban growth is simulated, compared and analyzed with the data of urban areas from Landsat data on the assumption that Greenbelt areas haven't been set in Busan from 1972 till 1997. Through this study we can see that Geumjong-gu and Buk-gu, where Greenbelt areas are included, have been on the decrease unlike other areas Landsat data, such as Dongnae-gu and Haeundae-gu, which have grown to 500 cell. We can also see that Busan metropolitan areas have a specific character in its growth: they have a tendency to grow indiscreetly due to extremely mountainous topography.
