This paper presents viscoelastic damping systems for wind-induced vibration of tall buildings. A series of wind-tunnel tests were conducted in a boundary layer wind tunnel, under careful control of temperature, to investigate the effectiveness of viscoelastic dampers in attenuating the dynamic response. Viscoelastic dampers with two damping levels were designed and added to a full aeroelastic building model. It is stressed that a temperature rise within the viscoelastic damper due to long duration of wind loads can change the properties of the damper. It is investigated from several damper placement tests that the location of viscoelastic dampers plays an important role of the efficient use of dampers. It is interesting to note that the dampers were not as effective in damping energy at the vortex-shedding frequency as for other modal frequencies. Vortex-induced vibration may not be important compared with modal vibrations, except for a resonant frequency.
