본 연구는 IQ의 대안 또는 보완으로 부상하고 있는 EI의 본질 및 정체를 규명하여 보고 나아가서 감성지능의 타당한 구인 구성 및 그 확인, 그리고 감성지능과 관련된 연구변인을 탐색하고자 하였다. 연구자는 다양한 감성지능 관점의 소개, 감성지능 타당화와 관련된 준거척도들의 확인, 그리고 종합적인 감성지능의 가설적 개념모형 제시와 아울러 감성지능과 직접․간접으로 관련있는 관련 연구변인들을 개인 변인군, 관계 변인군, 그리고 사회․문화적 변인군으로 제시하였다. 끝으로 감성지능 연구의 제 방향 등을 논의하여 보았다.


The purpose of this study was to explore answers about the following three questions through literature reviews related to emotional intelligence: 1) What is the nature of emotional intelligence and how does its hypothetical construct differ from general intelligence and personality test?, 2) What are the appropriate criterion measures to check the convergent, discriminant, and incremental validity of emotional intelligence?, and 3) What are the kinds and types of research variables which directly or indirectly influence emotional competence? By reviewing the recent research data about emotional intelligence, research introduced the diverse points of view about concept and construct of emotional intelligence, especially as the useful alternative of traditional academic intelligence. Research proposed a hypothetical model for emotional intelligence inquiry, which consisted of four ports, that is, cognitive traits, noncognitical traits, the combined traits of cognitive and noncognitical traits, and independent traits. The adequacy of this model should be empirically tested by researchers. In addition, research provided a way for research flow chart about emotional intelligence and in related variables. This research flow chart would show research direction in the future related to emotional intelligence problems and those solution.
