The purpose of this study is to obtain basic data on the properties of the lightweight concrete contained expandable polystyrene beads for various applications in the field. For the purpose of investigating the properties followed by changing cement matrix mixture and the volume mixing rate of expandable polystyrene beads, the mix proportion of this study is set up as W/C is fixed 50%, expandable polystyrene beads is substituted by 10% from 0% to 80% per 1㎥ and the rate of cement:sand in the cement matrix is 1:0, 1:0.5, 1:1. The results of this study are as follows. The slump as changing the substitution rate of expandable polystyrene beads decreased smoothly until 50% but decreased rapidly over substitution rate 50%. The density and the water absorption rate decreased regularly as the mixing rate of expanded polystyrene beads increased and the compressive strength decreased too. The compressive strength of cement matrix of high sand mixing rate increased until substitution rate 40%, but over 40% decreased. The heat conductivity increased as expandable polystyrene beads substitution was higher. Now, we classified light weight concrete contained expandable polystyrene beads into 3 classes. The first class is beads substitution 0~10%, which is not economically efficient. The second class is beads substitution 20~60%, which can be used as structure or non structure factory manufacturing material. The last class is beads substitution 70~80%, which can be used as thermal insulation material. From now on, we will study this lightweight concrete as use purpose, so will propose suitable mixing proportion by use purpose.
