In this study a damage tolerant braced frame system is proposed and a performance-based seismic design procedure is provided based on the direct displacement design method. The proposed structure system is composed of a hinge-connected main structure system, which is designed only for gravity load, and a buckling-restrained brace system resisting all the lateral load. At seismic event, the proposed system has advantage in that all the structural damage is focused on the brace system, and the main structural members, such as columns and beams, remain elastic. The buckling-restrained braces dissipate dynamic energy through stable hysteretic behavior. The design procedure is applied to 3, 5, and 10-story structures to verify the applicability of the method. The results show that the maximum displacements of the 3 and 5-story model structures designed in accordance with the proposed method coincide well with the given target displacements. However, the maximum displacements of the 10-story structure show some difference with the target point due to the higher mode effect and additional stress in columns induced by the lateral load.
