This study compares the results of environmental performance using a variety of environmental assessment tools to evaluate building quality and performance in terms of energy, environmental impact and health indicators. Using the following tools, GB Tool, British Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology (BREEAM), Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System, and a Green Government Building Checklist, calculations were compared on a model office building in Kyushu, Japan. The building performed highly in indoor environmental quality with all the assessment tools, yet scored low on the categories of "resource re-use" and "impact on the local environment". The GB Tool was complex and required many calculations. BREEAM was relatively easy to use, but strongly weighted in the category of "energy efficiency". LEED had a better user-interface than the GB Tool, but required background knowledge to design guidelines. The Green Government Building Checklist had no quantitative evaluation criteria. The evaluation scores between the tools differed in their overall assessment on this building.
