The purpose of the present study is to analyze the listening materials and activities of the second year middle school English textbooks and to suggest pedagogical implications based on the results of the study. Chapter 1 of this paper gives the rationale for the study. Chapter 2 provides literature reviews on the listening skills. Chapter 3 gives the results of analyzing the listening materials associated with three English textbooks for the second year middle school based on the Seventh National Curriculum. The three textbooks were carefully selected since they were used most frequently in Kyunggi Province. The listening sections in each textbook were analyzed in terms of the Seventh National Curriculum and a questionnaire was administered to eighty-five second year middle school students in the area. The eighteen items were used to measure students’ interests and needs in listening in English class. Subjects were asked to express their satisfaction and study objectives in relation to listening. Based on the description of listening in the Seventh National Curriculum and the results of the questionnaire, the present study made a further investigation concerning the integration of the spoken language skills (i.e., listening and speaking) and the written language in the textbooks used in the study. Pedagogical implications are presented based on the findings, followed by a lesson plan for a listening class.
