Clearance means the accomplishment of the customs procedures necessary to allow goods to enter home use, to be expected or to be placed under another customs procedures. And customs procedures means all the operations which must be carried out by the persons concerned and by the customs in order to comply with the customs law. When considering customs procedures in general, the exporter must bear in mind that there are many variations special provisions and developments to be encountered. Reference should always be made ti their various notices and other publications, and if in any doubt, the appropriate customs officers should be consulted. When considering customs procedures, the exporter must bear in mind that considerable development is taking place in the streamlining and simplifying of customs entry and documentation. In many cases the single administrative document type of entry lodgement can be replaced by computer statistical scheduling, information on magnetic tape and other forms of data transfer(EDI). For automated clearance procedures, the format of the electronically lodged goods declaration shall be based on international standards for electronic information exchange as prescribed in the Customs Co-operation Council Recommendations on information technology. The purpose of this work is to explore the customs clearance procedures, to analyze the extent of the automation of the customs clearance procedures in US, Japan, Europe and Korea, and to search the plan to strengthen the competitiveness of Korean enterprises through the automation of the customs clearance procedures.
