Lee, Eun-hee. 2002. Sociolinguistics and Korean Language Education. The Sociolinguistic Journal of Korea, 10(2). This essay is an attempt to make a better direction for a sociolinguistic approach in Korean language education as mother tongue. To do so, this essay investigates the following points in three aspects of view of language, language planning and language description method: the sociologistic meaning of Korean language education, the situations in which sociologistic contents are dealt with in the education, and the direction by which sociolinguistic study should be carried out. Sociolinguistic forms a basis of language view of Korean language education in terms of emphasizing communicative competence. It also an important clue to solve the problems faced in Korean language education by describing language empirically. The sociolinguistic meaning of the education is manifest in the curriculum of Korean language eduaction, especially in the definition of its nature and objective. However, considering both contents items of curriculum and texts themselves, sociolinguistic characteristics are not properly reflected in the practice of Korean language education. This problem is mainly caused by a lack of sociolinguistic research in terms of Korean language education. To solve it and advance academically Korean language education, sociolinguistic research and systematization in view of the education should be performed.
