In this study, I investigated the tone of Daegu and Andong dialects, the sub-dialects of Gyeongbuk dialect, and compared their tonal systems and phenomena. On the foundation of this work, I examined the changing process of prosodic system and the relationship between these two dialects. These two dialects have same tonal system, but they have not a few differences. The remarkable difference is discovered at the tonal phenomena of ‘an(안)-negative sentence’ and ‘Wh-interrogative sentence’. In Andong dialect, the tone patterns of negative phrase and interrogative phrase are formed by general ‘tone pattern combination rule’. But this rule is violated in Daegu dialect. In Daegu dialect, all ‘an(안)-negative phrase’ and ‘Wh-interrogative phrase’ are pronounced the same tone pattern ‘/HnL/ [Ln-1HL]’. This tone pattern of Daegu dialect is due to the purpose of emphasizing the meaning of the phrase. Therefore I regard this tone pattern ‘/HnL/[Ln-1HL]’ as not a tone pattern but an intonational pattern.Andong dialect shows a marked tendency in the vowel shortening of ‘rasing-tone pattern’ and the changing into ‘high-tone pattern’ of the ‘nagadra(나가드라)-class’ and ‘gagra(가그라)-class’. They are playing the role of making tonal system simplified by reducing the number of tone patterns.
