This study has looked into the concept of popularity and how this popularity is realized in the work of Kim Mal Bong, Millim. Popularity relies on being diagrammatical and stimulative for enhancing the readers’ understanding and attracting their interest. Included in its characteristic subcategories are the erotic of sex, the sensational of violence, the fantastic of day dreaming, the sentimental of extreme, the novel of strange, and the marvelous of coincidence. In Millim, the extreme contrast is given among characters and situa- tions. And the excessive emotion leads to the sentimental, through which the leisure and carefreeness of rich intellects is criticized and the meaning of pain and labor among poor workers at Incheon piers is made prominent. The marvelous is shown through inducing misunderstanding and revealing secrets by repeated coincidences, which results in sudden changes of the main characters’ fate. The novel is expressed by unfamiliar Western coun- tries. However, the extent of the erotic and the sensational is subtle and the fantastic is hard to find out.In Millim, the desire for love and money, which is a typical matter of interest, is a basis upon which the disastrous finals of characters who are in a hot pursuit it. On the other hand, this work also shows how the characters make sacrifices for the poor people by restraining themselves and giving up their own happiness in pursuit of the happiness of all. Thus, Millim should be regarded as a popular novel rather than a vulgar novel in that, it respects the actual behavior of enlightened intellects salvaging the poor.
