The purpose of this study is to explain the aspects of meaning extension by gestalt elements in view of cognitive linguistics in Korean. So I have a closer look how the findings of the gestalt psychologists affect the study of language. The gestalt psychologists were very interested in how our visual and auditory input is organized in terms of the prominence of the different parts, besides such perceptual principle as the laws of proximity, closure, continuation and figure/ground segregation phenomenon, whole-part relation. The results are summarized as follow: First, The use of trajector and landmark has been generalized in cognitive linguistics, so trajector stands for the figure of most prominent element in any relational structure, wheres landmark refers to the other entity in a relation. Second, the figure/ground segregation phenomenon can be seen in terms of locative relations, which are usually rendered by Korean movement verb ‘ka-da’(go) and in the ditransitive construction, it confirms the link between agent, head of action chain and syntactic figure or subject. The meanings of ‘ka-da’ are extended to the abstracts concept which is based on metaphorical principle. Finally, the meaning extension of compound word occur mainly due to metaphoric and metonymic functions. This aspects are explained to whole-part relation.
