This paper analyzes the modernity in Kim Soo-young’s poems from the viewpoint of irony. The irony is mentioned in this paper in philosophical, cognitive, and figurative sense. Namely, to look at realities from two differentiated angles of vision represents ‘the viewpoint of difference’, which, if anything, constitutes a true cognizance. The vision of modernity ironically smelt in Kim’s poems opens poetry to philosophy and is interpreted as a closed boundary of modern thinking, while sometimes deriving a post- modern standpoint linking pre-modern to post-modern times. Likewise, Kim’s poetic achievements become a tractive power not just for him and his ages, but also for these times. Kim’s poetry also shows a incomplete pattern which still has its own limitations. Nevertheless, his works and spirit must be highly regarded in literary history in that they’ve represented typical forms of ‘living in ironic modern ages’. His modern spirit has constantly migrated toward a dialectic integration which combines thinking and life and poetry, which shows Kim’s principles of ironic aesthetics have been formed in accordance with the physiology of modern times. In addition, Kim’s poetic world symbolizes his pursuit of the principles transcending modern times, which becomes a true value of Kim’s poetry found in present times.
