This thesis aims for investigating into changing of falling diphthong ‘ㅚ[oy], ㅟ[uy]’ through researching a synchronic /o, u/ umlaut of Kyeongbuk dialect. In Kyeongbuk dialect that monophthong /, / is absent, monophthong /o, u/ is alternated with /wE, wi/ when /o, u/ is assimilated to following /i, y/. This fact shows the possibility that /o, u/ was alternated with /wE, wi/ as /o, u/ was umlauted, even when ‘ㅚ, ㅟ’ had been falling diphthong /oy, uy/. As the /we, wi/ formed to the /o, u/ umlaut is extended the distribution, the falling diphthong ‘ㅚ/oy/, ㅟ/uy/’ is merged with /we, wi/.For that reason, the falling diphthong ‘ㅚ/oy/, ㅟ/uy]’ was changed /we, wi/ directly without through monophthong /, / in Kyeongbuk dialect. And monophthong /, / had never been a unite of phoneme at vowel system in Kyeongbuk dialect.
