This study investigates how Korean newspapers cover the educational beat regarding universities, and compares its findings with those of the New York Times, Washington Post, and Los Angeles Times. It examines how Korean newspapers deal with educational issues, especially in terms of positive vs. negative reporting, functional vs. structural vs. philosophical educational reform, and various news values including deviance, objectivity, diversity, and investigation. In order to explore the Korean newspapers ways and patterns of covering the university issues and problems, we analyzed 353 news articles randomly chosen from four Korean newspapers, including the Dong-A Ilbo, Chosun Ilbo, Joong-Ang Ilbo, and Hankyoreh Shinmoon during the two years of 2000 and 2001. We then compared their coverage with 129 news articles randomly chosen from the three American newspapers for the same period. Our results show that Korean newspapers covered the universities much more negatively than the American counterparts did. For example, 65 percent of the Dong-A Ilbos news articles were negative in their coverage but only 25 percent of the New York Times articles were negative. This comparison is statistically significant. In addition, Korean newspapers demonstrated somewhat lower journalistic standards as compared with American newspapers including the New York Times coverage Korean newspapers coverage was dull, superficial, one-sided, inaccurate, and less investigative. Nevertheless, results show that the gaps between them were not so wide that they could be bridged. In addition, the Joong-Ang Ilbo, quite differently from the other three Korean newspapers, seems to have caught onto some of the educational coverage styles of the New York Times. Based on these findings, we pinpoint typical characteristics of Korean newspapers coverage of university news and suggest new ways of covering the education beat.
