There are two contemporary trends which directly or indirectly refer toSpinoza’s theory of the human body and use it as a basis for thedevelopment of further work:the theory of embodied mind in cognitivescience, and the current Spinoza studies in France which focus uponindividuation. In this essay, I first show that the theory of embodied mindcan supply fresh empirical evidence for Spinoza’s thesis that “the mind is theidea of the body.” Secondly, a discussion of the contemporary FrenchSpinoza studies shows how his theory of individuation requiresneurophysiology and cognitive science to be combined with ontology andpolitical philosophy.
