ABSTRACT

This study explores the aspects of personal narrative discourses of first graders in an elementary school. To achieve the purpose of this study, researcher analyzed 41 narrative discourses in a class generated from first graders in Sejong. The personal narrative discourses are created on October 2016 and February 2017. They are about the students’ experiences during the weekend and winter vacation. The students selected and presented one important event that occurred during their weekend and vacation. Analysis shows that the students presented their personal narratives using a time-event-emotion structure. In addition, it shows that the level of development, in terms of structure, is 3.6 and 2.3 C-units on average. Researcher compared and noted the gender differences in narrative discourses. The level of the female students’ narratives are 1.6 higher and have one more C-units than male students. Furthermore, male students tend to speak short, concise sentences while female students speak with longer and more complex sentences. Therefore, the results are beneficial in developing the listening and speaking aspects of textbooks as well as the teaching methods used with first graders in elementary schools.
