AB - In 1774, since Lee, Byŏng-hyu(李秉休) has made Sŏngho-sŏnsaeng-munjip[湖先生文集, the collection of Sŏngho, Leeik(李瀷)], Both Sŏngho-sŏnsaeng-munjip and Sŏngho-sŏnsaeng-jŏnjip(星湖先生全集) were published as woodcuts. Sŏngho-sŏnsaeng-munjip was published by Noh, Sang-jik(盧相稷) and Lee, Beong-hee(李炳憙), and so on at Sŏgojŏngsa(西皐精舍) which was located in T'oerori(退老里), Milyang(密陽) in 1917, and Sŏngho-sŏnsaeng-jŏnjip by Ahn, Hŭi-wŏn(安禧遠) and Kim, Ho-sŭng(金鎬承), and so on at Moryŏmdang(慕濂堂) which was located in Sap'ori(沙浦里), Milyang in 1922. Sŏngho-sŏnsaeng-munjip which was compiled by Lee, Beong-hyu was shortened again by Lee, Nam-kyu(李南珪) in 1890, based on this, he published Sŏngho-sŏnsaeng-munjip in Sŏgojŏngsa, Tero-ri. The fundamental reason for making brief was to reduce expenses. Therefore, many parts of Sŏngho- sŏnsaeng-munjip, compiled by Lee, Beong-hyu, were deleted in Sŏngho- sŏnsaeng-munjip that was published at Tero-ri. However, An, Hŭi-wŏn and Kim, Ho-sŭng had insisted on publishing with the original collection of Sŏngho-sŏnsaeng-munjip, compiled by Lee, Byŏng-hyu. As soon as Sŏngho-sŏnsaeng-munjip was published in Tero-ri, they had dissatisfaction of it. they immediately started to publish Sŏngho-sŏnsaeng-jŏnjip based on the original collection. Sŏngho-sŏnsaeng- munjip compiled by Lee, Beong-hyu was used as a manuscript of publication. Five years later, they finally finished publishing Sŏngho-sŏnsaeng-jŏnjip in 1922 with some deletion and modifications. Thus, comparing with Sŏngho- sŏnsaeng-munjip published in Tero-ri, it is much more substantial in contents of Sŏngho-sŏnsaeng-munjip compiled by Lee, Beong-hyu. Likewise, there is a big difference between Sŏngho-sŏnsaeng-munjip and Sŏngho-sŏnsaeng-jŏnjip in quantity because of shortening. Sŏngho-sŏnsaeng- jŏnjip is more valuable in terms of historical materials and uses. But It is cannot be recognized as a complete publication of Sŏngho-sŏnsaeng-munjip because it was applied to some deletions and modifications. Therefore, we can not avoid feeling sorry about that two-published-collections could not surpass the original collection, compiled by Lee, Beong-hyu in 1774. I hope to collect all of the missing texts from the publishing, and then to make a new version of the original texts.
