ABSTRACT

The current Korean society is getting ready for the reunification of the two Koreas and the Korean literature is following this trend. This study examined the representation of North Korean children refugees in unified literature. Especially, I analyzed the positive and negative image of North Korean defectors in children’s storybook that were published since the 2000s. From the beginning of the 21st century, the theme of North Korean defectors in children’s storybook has evolved into recovering the cultural homogeneity of North and South Korea, nonetheless, the images of North Korean children were used to illustrate the double-sided characteristic and the limitations of the North Korean government. Within these storybooks, the North Korean children make greater attempts to incorporate into the South Korean society but these efforts fail. This suggests that the stereotypes and negative perspective towards North Koreans still exist within our society. Nevertheless, a positive signal is that the North Korean defectors themselves are becoming the true masters within the Korean society, and their stance is changing from an outsider to an insider.
