ABSTRACT

This study is to examine noun phrase accessibility hierarchy(NPAH) of relative clauses(RC) in L2 Korean and compare aspects of relative clauses in Korean L2 learners’ production. The experiment was conducted with 26 Korean learners speaking English, 41 Japanese and 45 Chinese who were in intermediate level. Written and spoken data were collected after watching 10 minutes of short nonverbal movies. Relative clauses in the written and spoken data were classified to SU(Subjective), DO(Direct Object) and OBL(Oblique) relative clauses and compared by groups divided by first language of learners, measuring average number of SU, DO and OBL relative clauses and average number of syntactic words in a relative clauses. As results, regardless of learner's first language, all groups showed same order in productive ability for relative clauses in Korean as SU, OBL and DO. So there still seems to be some universal aspects in acquisition of relative clauses in Korean, even though it doesn't match with NPAH. English-speaking Korean learners showed higher frequency in production whereas Japanese-speaking Korean learners showed high ability in average number of syntactic words in a relative clause. These results made us presume some relative aspects in acquisition of L2 Korean relative clauses by learners’ first languages and individual factors.
