ABSTRACT
This study focuses on one case of the education by questionnaire mail between Yun Ki(尹愭) and Lee Ik(李瀷). The education by mail was used as a major method of learning in Seong Ho academy(星湖學堂). So this case will provide help to understand the method of the pre-modern education. The results are as follows. First, the background of the case was the initiation of Yun Ki as a pupil of Lee Ik.(1760) And the entrance for the minor state examination of Yun Ki was another factor to make the questionnaire about <Learning through Practice(小學)>. Second, the questions of Yun Ki were 33. They can be divided three categories, one is reading question(4), another is translation question(28), and the other is understanding question(1). When Yun Ki made the questionnaire, he made an effort to clear up his points. Third, the answers of Lee Ik were given to the questions one by one. But the intention of Lee Ik was not to simply suggest right answers to them. Before answering, he made a diagnosis Yun Ki's level, and the intention of the questions. And the aims of the answers was focused to enhance the learning of Yun Ki. So the answers can be educational. Fourth, the meanings of the case can be said by two aspects. One is as the start point of the life long education of Yun Ki and the other is as the major method of learning of Seong Ho academy. Yun Ki could enter the Song Ho academic traditions by the education by questionnaire mail. And the case shed a light to understand the educational method of Seong Ho school. The process of the education by questionnaire mail is not linear patten as answers to question, but multi layered sequence of question, understanding of the intention, educational consideration and answer.
