ABSTRACT

Purpose: This research purports to review literature on articulation and phonological disorder assessments in Korea and to make suggestions for future research based on the analyses of the literature. Methods: Fifty research articles published from 2003 to 2015 were selected for review. Of particular interest were the assessment variables and the assessment tools, and both were analyzed by year, disorder types, and subjects’ age. Results: First, the assessment variables were analyzed. When analyzed by year, Consonant Accuracy was found to be the most used (76%) variable. The analysis by disorder types showed that articulation and phonological disorders used Consonant Accuracy the most (48%). By subjects’ age, Consonant Accuracy was used the most for preschool children (68%). Next, the assessment tools were analyzed. The analysis by year reported that Urimal Test of articulation and phonology (U-TAP) was used the most (68%). By disorder types, U-TAP was used the most for articulation and phonological disorders (19/50). Lastly, U-TAP was used the most for preschool children (50%) by subjects’ age. Conclusions: Analyses of the assessment variables reported that Consonant Accuracy was used the most for articulation and phonological disorders and for preschool children. As for the assessment tools, U-TAP was used the most for articulation and phonological disorders and for preschool children. The results indicate that the articulation and phonological disorder assessments have been heavily reliant upon a limited number of variables and tools. Also, the results report the lack of assessments for elementary students, adolescents, and adults. Further research is suggested for the development of various articulation and phonological disorders assessments.
