ABSTRACT

Central to the notion of self-realisation currently in the ascendant is the modern Western view of a substantial self that tries to secure oneself, separate from things in the ‘outside’ world. What is common both to Buddhism and Heideggerian existentialism, however, is a denial of self-world dualism. As the subject of all phenomenal existence, a substantial self is in fact provisional in the sense of being dependently originated from other causes and conditions. It is by way of awakening from the illusion of self-substantiality or self-identification that the ideal of self-authenticity begins to be pursued. Buddhism and Heideggerian existentialism show that what is implicit in all of our ordinary conceptions of the self is the nothing or selflessness as the essence of self, and that the full awareness of this leads us to the holistic view of the self and the world. What essentially characterises the ideal of self-authenticity is the holistic state of consciousness. A human being is given the ontological duty of pursuing the ideal of self-authenticity, and the ways of performing this duty are not standardised because they should be based upon individual existence. Samatha-Vipassana Meditation in Buddhism and poiesis in Heidegger’s existentialism are the exemplar practices of attaining the ideal of self-authenticity that stand in sharp contrast to the modern educational ideal of self-realisation as self-expansion.
