ABSTRACT

The objective of this study is to find diverse ways to interpret modernist poetry, based on 「The grass」by Kim Soo-young and how actual readers understand this poem. There are two main factors that affect interpretations of the poem. One is ‘The text’ and the other is ‘The reader’. In this study, the fomer is related to ‘the validity’ and the latter is related to ‘the diversity’. One of the feature of modernist poetry is discord called ‘Negativity’ between the protagonist and the society. This concept is suitable for an analysis of "The grass". As a result, actual learners have escaped from the schematism of ‘the people’, to some extent, in interpreting the implied meaning of ‘the Grass’ and presented a variety of interpretations, including ‘growing existence’, ‘the prophetic one’, ‘flexible existence’, ‘nature object’. Through the class planning process in search of ‘diversity’ and ‘validity’ of interpreting modernist poetry texts, learner will be able to experience the principal’s awakening and the practice will’ under the world of negativity.
