ABSTRACT

This study aims to provide fundamental resources for safety education in practical arts and clothing as safety education section is newly established in the recently revised curriculum of 2015. The research contains the analysis of safety contents of twelve practical arts textbooks and posits analysis of the perception of fifteen pre-service elementary school teachers on clothing safety through interview. The results of this research are the following. Firstly, safety element of clothing life in practical arts textbooks are closely related to 'life safety'. Within 'life safety' area, 'physical activity' contents appear most frequently and are followed by 'occupational safety', 'traffic safety','disaster safety' and 'violence and personal safety'. Clothing life safety content proposed in the practical arts textbooks mainly focus on practice instead of principles such that causes and methods are unknown and require supplementation. Hence, safety contents related to production and management of clothing are in need of further development. Secondly, the results from in-depth interview on clothing life safety education conducted with pre-service elementary school teachers, show that teachers' experience and their level of safety performance are very insufficient and perception on clothing life and safety is found to be fragmentary. Teachers demonstrate sound knowledge on clothing and protection equipment needed in leisure and sports activities, but they show insufficient level of perception on daily-life clothing life safety. Furthermore, pre-service elementary school teachers emphasize the importance of clothing life safety education in elementary school curriculum under pretext of improving students' preception and habit of clothing life safety. Pre-service elementary school teachers play a vital role in students' clothing life safety education, so in-depth education on general knowledge and principle of clothing life safety education is needed. This study further proposes survey on perception level of elementary school students on clothing life safety and analysis of textbooks for all grades, so that in sum, this research put forward persistent research on clothing life safety education, which is needed for development of contents related to clothing life and safety education.
