ABSTRACT

Purpose: People use connective endings as a final function as well as a connective function in spoken language. Few studies have examined connective endings with both functions for preschoolers. This study examines how typically developing preschoolers use connective endings in spontaneous conversation Methods: 12,000 utterances of forty 2-5 year-old children with typical development were collected during interaction with their mothers. The utterances were transcribed and refined by trained graduate students. Types and tokens of connective endings as a connective function and a final function were analyzed by automatic Morpheme Analyzer and confirmed manually. The children's errors were also examined. Results: As the ages increased, so did the types and tokens of connective endings in both functions. Conditional meaning ‘-meon', sequential meaning '-ko', additive meaning '-ko' were the mostly produced connective ending with a connective function. And types and tokens were greatly increased between 2 and 3 year-old children. In connective endings with a final function, '-nunde', '-ko' and '-seo' were the mostly produced endings. Overall types and tokens of connective endings with a final function were higher than types and tokens of connective endings with a connective function. Conclusions: These results reflect the characteristics of spoken language. And these results are significant in that the utterances for analysis were collected in very natural and everyday situations.
