ABSTRACT

Purpose: This study was to provide understanding of the meaning of the health care experiences in pregnancyand childbirth among the married immigrant women. Methods: Date were collected through a face-to-face interviewfrom 6 married immigrant women. Their conjugal lives were followed using the hermeneutics phenomenologicalmethod developed by van Manen: focusing on the meaning of lived experience. Results: The essentialthemes that were associated with the health care experiences of the participants lives during pregnancy and childbirthwere as follows: “awareness of the changing body”, “fear of unwanted pregnancy”, “focused on the bodyand mind for the kids”, “Family with baby and be assimilated into the health care”, “stable and harmonious lifepursuit in Korean women”. Conclusion: It contributes a deeper understanding of the essence of the health careexperiences of married immigrant women who undergo pregnancy and childbirth after immigration. On the basisof this understanding, the need for multicultural nursing and health program is considered that the emerging theorythat can provide appropriate care to nursing subjects in a multicultural society.
