ABSTRACT

This paper aimed at investigating the aspect and significance of SukyeongnangjaJeon by paying attention to the point as a 'romantic love story'. SukyeongnangjaJeon is a story about the love between Sukyeongnangja and Seongun, a 'romantic love story' which described the figure of marriage through love after free romantic relationship between male and female within the marriage institution of that period, different from other love stories between yangban and gisaeng, which was the mainstream at that time, also, is a work to bring up a problem about the marriage institution and patriarchy of that time through this. Therefore, this paper concretely investigated the aspect of a 'romantic love story' of SukyeongnangjaJeon through the process of meeting, match, crisis, overcome in sequence, which is the structure of a love story, then discussed the significance therein. Sukyeongnangja and Seongun were the characters, descended to accomplish unfulfilled love, Sukyeongnangja lived in Ogyeondong and Seongun was born as a human to wait to tie the knot. However, when Seongun's parents disregarded their knot and found out their son's spouse, Sukyeongnangja appeared in Seongun's dream, feeling crisis, and their free love began through the meeting in dreams. When Seongun became lovesick to death while continuing meeting in dreams, Sukyeongnangja told him to come over to Ogyeondong, so Seongun tied the knot with her in Ogyeondong, shaking off his parents' dissuasion, returned home with Sukyeongnangja and lead a happy marriage, having their children, living in Dongbyeoldang. This way, Sukyeongnangja and Seongun married only through their love without parents' concern, and continued a couple-focused happy married life. However, even after marriage, they only fell for each other and neglected social responsibility, which caused the surroundings' concerns. Here, Seongun departed for Gwageo exam, however, he returned home several times, being unable to forget Sukyeongnangja, which caused a fidelity plot by the father-in-law, who misunderstood this as meeting another man, and finally she stabbed herself with a sword. From the position of traditional society, which emphasized the group and the ethics and order of community more than individual, free love and marriage between male and female was riskful, love between Sukyeongnangja and Seongun could not help being oppressed by feudal order and norms. However, Sukyeongnangja and Seongun never accepted this one-way sacrifice as it is. Sukyeongnangja resolved her resentment through Seongun and born again after funeral in Ogyeondong, then continued intact love with Seongun without circumferential interruption. This way, Sukyeongnangja and Seongun overcame the suppression of social order and the marriage institution of that period strongly revealed their will to pursue love by continuing their love till the end even overcoming death. As discussed so far Sukyeongnangja and Seongun showed their refusal to the marriage institution and paternalism, which emphasized maintenance and prosperity of family and community rather than love between man and woman, through realizing a marriage through love and equal marital relations. Lastly, 'sex and marriage based on love', which Seongun and Sukyeongnangja showed, has a significance that it suggested a modern love system of a new type, different from the general aspect of love and marriage of the traditional society. SukyeongnangjaJeon's 'romantic love story', like this, has a significance that it reflected the women readers' desire of that time through 'feminised love story'. In the traditional society, where self-realization of women could be realized only through marriage, it was the biggest desire for the women, who must have endured their husbands' strange and exclusive family life by being subordinate to male, to meet a man 'who loves only me forever' to realize the exclusiveness and eternity of love to maintain equal marital relations. This way, 'romantic love story' which SukyeongnangjaJeon described, can be said to be a work which shows newness, in respect that it presents problems of the marriage institution and paternalism of that time, going beyond the general popularity which the love stories between man and woman beyond obstacle showed.
