ABSTRACT

This thesis is focused on comparing and studying the post-war works of the female writers Miyamoto Yuriko and Hayashi Humiko, who became active before the World War II and during wartime. First, in the case of Miyamoto Yuriko, she expressed antagonism against state violence and the fascism of the pro-emperor throughout the wartime, and joined the writers' union, which was part of the Japanese proletariat, in 1930 when the war intensified. She led a hard life of being imprisoned, discharged, and banned from writing. Hayashi Humiko, on the other hand, as a member of the wartime 'pen battalion', cooperated actively, and she published numerous works catering to the state of affairs. What is interesting is that the new keyword “anti-war” is lumps together two female writers who came from such different backgrounds. The limitations of both authors are clear. Humiko took on the role of cheerleader for the war faithfully, vividly showing the aftermath of defeated war and mental panic, while Yuriko, who was one of the few female writers who could be questioned for the post-war responsibility of the literati as a proletarian writer.
