ABSTRACT

This paper discussed whether or not the idiomatic expressions in Korean are stored in the lexicon. The problem is because (i)the idiomatic expressions like words are used as a fixed meaning in the sentence but (ii) under the assumption that the words only can become the elements in the lexicon, the idiomatic expressions are the bigger units such as XP or S than the words. This paper adopted Dixon’s suggestion about the lexemes which are the ingredients of lexicon, investigated the so-called “verbal idiomatic expression in Korea” and then explained why the idiomatic expressions should be stored in the lexicon. As the burden of proof, this paper proposed that followings. Firstly, the lexemes are roots or underlying labels and they are only realized as the words in the surface forms. Secondly, the meanings of “sentence” are interpreted based on the semantic units such as lexical entry, eventuality, and proposition. During the interpreted the semantic units, the meanings of the units are divided as two parts such as the unidiomatic meaning and the idiomatic expression. Thirdly, even the phrase or the clause, if the semantic unit is interpreted as the idiomatic expression, it should be stored in the lexicon.
