ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to facilitate visual sensibility caused by liquid color to positively affect product design based on sensibility in an age emphasizing package transparency by identifying aroma and adjectives associated with liquid color differentiated by variations in concentration. This study is focusing more on synesthetic capacity of color and extending scope to include liquid colors to analyze the correlation between color and aroma in order to complement the limitations of preceding sensibility studies on color and aroma analyzing associated color by aroma and limited to solid colors. The study conducted a survey by asking participants to answer in five-point scale for the associated aroma from 8 types of aroma and 12 aromatic adjectives after preparing 21 liquid color samples of 7 colors (R, YR, Y, GY, G, B, P) differentiated into 3 types of concentration equally on the color wheel, quantified in L*a*b* values. Survey results demonstrated color characteristics in aroma from 8 different categories leading to the conclusion that color plays an important part in determining the association of aroma. In addition, there were differences in the strength of associated aroma according to concentration. Whereas citrus flavor was the most strongly associated with YR color liquid of medium concentration, fruity flavor was the most strongly associated with the same color liquid of high concentration demonstrating different sort of flavor can be associated with variation in concentration even when the liquid colors are identical. Finally, it is possible to produce association of specific aromatic image in an effective way by controlling the concentration as there are variations in associated adjectives according to concentration.
