ABSTRACT

The purpose of the present study was to identify the characteristics of discourse comprehension in patients with MCI and DAT. Eleven patients with DAT (CDR 1), 11 patients with MCI (CDR 0.5), and 11 healthy controls participated in this study. Two stories consisting of three question types were used: a literal information (LI) task, a text-connecting information (TC) task, and a gap-filling inference (GF) task. Six types of errors were analyzed: ‘inference error,’ ‘question scope error,’ ‘question comprehension error,’ ‘information comprehension error,’ ‘odd response,’ and ‘don’t know response.’ The results were as follows: 1) Overall scores on the discourse comprehension task differed significantly in all three groups. 2) All three groups showed the highest performance in the gap-filling inference (GF) task and the lowest performance in the text-connecting information (TC) task. 3) The error type analysis of the comprehension task showed that the NC groups produced most ‘information comprehension errors,’ while the MCI group produced the most ‘don't know’ responses and the mild DAT group produced the most ‘odd responses.’ These results suggest that all groups would show similar response patterns in discourse comprehension, but have different characteristics in error type.
