ABSTRACT

Clothing products in stores and clothing brands are displayed under the concept of theVMD formed by a variety of lighting conditions, color temperature and illumination forvarious colors and materials. This study aimed at suggesting any impact that each typeof store-ambient lighting from white fluorescent lamps to incandescent lamps or a widevariety of illuminance depending upon conditions in each store brand by these givencategories (1200 lx, 700 lx, 300 lx) could possibly improve color appearance of clothingitems. From the results of this study, in the trend of color appearance for each samplecolor upon 13 assessment terms under experimental lighting and ambient illuminance, itturned out to be three characteristics below; (1)RED, YELLOW, BLUE samples whichshowed strongest dependence upon light source color of the emphasizing effect of colorappearance by the whole assessment terms (2)GREEN sample which showed different incolor appearance emphasizing by light sources color and illuminance level (3)WHITE andBLACK samples which showed both low illuminance dependence and similar emphasizingeffect of color appearance by the whole assessment terms. The principal componentanalysis(PCA) detected the main component 1 which could make the emphasizing effectof vivid color appearance under three different illuminance conditions for RED, YELLOW,GREEN and BLUE samples. As a result, throughout the whole sample colors, we couldfind that the terminology for evaluating color appearance referring to ‘light’, ‘glossy’,‘brilliant’, ‘showy’, ‘fresh’, ‘gay’ and ‘clear’ was the effective color appearance under theillumination with emphasizing effect upon each experimental color appearance term. Inaddition, we not only figured out the illuminance-dependence from the caculated valuesby CIECAM02 analysis in 3 different illuminance conditions that we used in the colorapperance assessment and from the aM, bM values calculated from colorfulness Q fromhigh to low illuminance of color appearance for samples(RED, YELLOW, GREEN, BLUE);but also could we suggest the possibility to draw out the relationship among correlationof colorfulness-plot, results comparing each difference of lighting and illuminance inGamut Area and results of subjective assessment from subject average.
