ABSTRACT

This study attempts to present some important suggestions for moral education for democratic citizenship by paying keen attention to Athenian democracy and its citizenship. Democratic Athens has been depicted as a wondrous regime of freedom, self-rule and creativity rather than as a warning about chaos and tyranny of mob rule. Many works on Athenian democracy exemplify a familiar effort to draw from the experience of ancient Athens lessons for a modern world, one which often sees itself as the heir to Athens' democratic principle and self-rule. In contrast to the popular view of modern times, this study argues that Athenian democracy tended to produce irrational and passionate citizens rather than resonable and responsible ones. This study emphasizes that the ethos of unbridled greed is not only Athenian democracy's chronic problem but also modern democracy's nagging problem. Temperance has been depicted as the foundation of democratic values. However, it is regarded as a negligible or unimportant virtue in modern times. This study's conclusion is that the ethos of self-control and self-restraint in democratic citizenship should be promoted vigorously in moral subject education.
