ABSTRACT

Alcohol addiction is known as a “family disease” that could not only damage the alcoholics themselves physically, mentally, psychologically and socially, but is also severly detrimental to the family. In particular, it has negative effects on their children, and thus hindering the children from maintaining close relationships with the opposite sex when they become adults. This study examined the romantic relationships of the unmarried women of paternal alcoholics, in order to further understand their relation experience and to provide basic data for social welfare interventions. The research question is this: what are the romantic relationships of the unmarried women of paternal alcoholics like? Through the qualitative study, the phenomenological method designed by Giorgi which seems to be more suitable for comprehending the complicated and intricate nature of developing romantic relationships, this study was conducted to delve into this relatively unknown area of research interest. From a counseling centerarea and a therapeutic communities, and the 알아넌, among the unmarried female ACOA who among the 20 to 39-year-old female ACOA whose father had participated in a therapeutic program or received medical treatments for their alcohol addiction. The data collection was conducted from May, 2011 to February, 2012. The data was collected by the method of in-depth interview. According to the interview results, 824 units of meaning were extracted. By transferring the units of meaning consisted of colloquial expressions that the subjects spoke into the academic terminology, these units of meaning were integrated into five categories and twelve theme clusters. These components are as follows. 1) I see ME: the personal identity of the daughter of an alcoholic, 2) I see YOU: You who are overshadowed by my father, 3) I meet YOU: the Hedgehog Dilemma, 4) WE also stand up: the tuning of relationships, 5) New WE: go on a trip again. The implications of this study for the field of social welfare are as follows. First, this study provided profound insights into the ACOA who received scarce attention in the field and practice of addiction. Second, this study provides the foundations of discussion for the concept of “separation” that have been empirically emphasized in self-help group as well as the concrete rationale behind the intervention for the “separation.” Third, the opportunities of self-correction, educational opportunities, and specific strategies on developing intimidate relationships should be provided. Fourth, thorough investigation and active intervention about sexual issue should be provided and conducted for the ACOA.
