ABSTRACT

This study is to consider the aspects of use of disagreement expressionin Korean honorifics from the new-novel. The disagreement expression in Korean honorifics means that thedialogue participants are using intentional grade of Korean honorificsexpecting that it may be difficult to reach the agreement with the hearerwith specific purpose. This disagreement expression is classified intoa cooperative type and a conflictive type according to the speaker'sintentions if he/she wants to cooperate or cause or expand the conflictin the dialogue. And the expression is sorted into self-oriented if thespeech is toward him/herself, but other-oriented if toward the others. A study of the disagreement expression in Korean honorifics in Koreanis expected to be helpful to catch the dynamics in using Korean honorificsby analyzing the expression, which has been excluded from the studyof Korean honorifics so far because it has been regarded to be unusualand ungrammatical. Furthermore, it is expected to be helpful to trace the changing aspectof using Korean honorifics through the comparative analysis of theperiodic data afterward.
