ABSTRACT

The purpose of this article is to analyze and Piracy in the South China Sea Region. In addition this paper examines the context of the terrorist threat to the maritime domain in South China Sea area. The emergence of asymmetric threats involving non-state actors such as terrorism, piracy and organized crime has become one of the key characteristics not only of the maritime order but also the geo-political landscape in the SCS region. It also makes an analysis of the incidence of piracy in the region and examines the issue of nexus among the terrorists and the pirates. The main arguments of the paper are twofold. First, this paper argues that the terrorist groups in the region lack capability to carry out a spectacular maritime terrorist attack despite having displayed intentions to do so. Second, as piracy in this part of world continues to be a criminal,for-profit enterprise, the possibility of pirates in the region working hand-in-gloves with terrorists could be a remote possibility.
