ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to estimate pre school children's whole-word abilities and to establish criteria for the whole-word approach to the treatment and diagnosis of phonological disorders in children. The subjects who participated in the experiment are 120 normal children aged 5 to 7 years living in Busan and Gyeongsangnam-do. There were no statistically significant gender differences in age and phonological abilities. The following are the results of this study. Firstly, there was a difference in whole-word correctness (PWC), complexity (PMLU), proximity (PWP), and variability (PWV) with age. Secondly, there was a high correlation between PCC (Percentage of Consonants Correct) and measurements of whole-words. Finally, there were correlations between all measurements. There was a positive correlation between whole-word correctness (PWC), complexity (PMLU) and proximity (PWP), but a negative correlation between variability (PWV) and other measurements.
