AB - Shin Dong-Yeop is well known as a representative national poet in Korea. However, this paper argues that Shin Dong-Yeop’s poetry is to be read in a new context of self-revising. Shin Dong-Yeop didn’t want his poetry to be regarded as the literary equivalent of a social movement. Rather, he argued, in his essay, that poetry itself should not be targeted and fixed as the mere literary referent of social signs. He thought poetry should be re-invented permanently. In his poetics, poetry is something that is always being created just same as the democracy. Democracy originally meant “people’s power(demokratia.)” So, the signified of this signifier can’t be fixed. Rather, it is a kind of ‘floating signifier’, the meaning of which is always to be re-inscribed. Then, according to Shin Dong-Yeop, the commom subject of democracy and poetry is not what they mean but how and what we hope to fulfill these signifiers. There lies aesthetics of democracy of Shin Dong-Yeop’s poetry.
