ABSTRACT

This paper is intended to analyse the aspect and function of line and stanza in Back suk’s Anthology Saseum and how it can be related to the structure of rhythm. The singularity of types in Saseum which have extreme long ones or short ones reflects the poet's experimental mind about rhythm. There are many extreme long lines and short lines in Saseum. The long lines show well the function of ‘expression’ about situation or feeling, the short lines show the function of ‘temperance’. The long lines form a sense of rhythm and a lengthy breathing by repetitive phrases, and the short lines form a sense of regular rhythm by unifying foot. The division of stanza is concerned closely with the method of creating a scene. The poems which have plural lines are divided into the case that the scenes are composed in consecutive order according to the change of place and time, focus, or sense, and the case that the scenes are arranged in a row without special change. The poems which have singular lines are stand out as the function of summarizing the scenes, and emphasis the tightly knit of sight, feeing, or cause-and-effect relationship by it. The unique forms of lines and stanzas in Saseum prove the creative structure of modern poetry that combines the rhythm and meaning, image, feeling.
