ABSTRACT

This paper investigated the original text of Samgaakbu, a compilation of the sijo poems, which were translated into classical Chinese. In this paper, I introduced the authors of Samgaakbu and shedded light on the meanings embedded in that book with regard to the history of the sijo genre. Firstly, I made clear of the misprints in Samgaakbu, which is owned by Kyoto University in Japan, and I compared a part of Samgaakbu to the other relevant books to verify the relationships between the books and Samgaakbu. Secondly, I scrutinized the authors of Samgaakbu to find out the interrelationship among them and to figure out their purpose of compiling the book. Finally, I criticized the poems in Samgaakbu to specify their literary aspects and to verify if the authors' goal that I looked into in the previous chapter had been achieved. Through these arguments, I clarified the characteristics of Samgaakbu as follows. Firstly, Samgaakbu was written by the authors who possessed the will to build up the national identity and to preserve the sijo genre. Secondly, the authors of Samgaakbu adopted the appropriate methods of translation in that they preserved the original contents and forms of the sijo poems and created imaginative title for each sijo. Lastly, Samgaakbu is a well organized anthology of sijo, in which the translated sijo poems were arranged in chronological and thematic order, accompanied by the original sijo texts in Korean characters, hangeul.
