ABSTRACT

This study applied two types of color stimulation, namely, color stimulation and color‐light stimulation using seven rainbow colors and measured brain wave responding to the stimulations, and examined the effects of color on human physiological and emotional responses based on the change of brain wave in different bands. For this study, we presented the two types of stimulation using each color to 20 adult men and women in their 30s 40s and measured their brain wave. According to the results of this study, first, the change of brain wave caused by color stimulation using red, orange and yellow had an awakening effect giving tension mainly in the cognitive and emotional aspects. On the contrary, color stimulation using green, blue, deep blue and violet had a relaxing effect in the visual aspect. Second, in the change of brain wave caused by color‐light stimulation, an awakening effect was observed in red, orange and deep blue, and a relaxing effect in the visual aspect was observed in yellow, green, blue and violet. Yellow and deep blue showed a result opposite to that in color stimulation. Third, according to difference in the change of brain wave induced by the two types of stimulation using seven colors, when yellow, blue or violet is used color stimulation was more effective to induce an awakening effect and color‐light stimulation was more effective to induce a relaxing effect. For red and deep blue, color‐light stimulation was more effective for an awakening effect and color stimulation for a relaxing effect. These results may be useful as scientific guidelines in various areas using color such as color counseling, color therapy and color environment.
