ABSTRACT

This paper pays attention to characters in Pansori works. Focused on main characters’ rages and sorrows which are taken to be the most prominent emotional reactions to problematic situations, this paper tries to find out their aspects and meanings as well as the significance of such emotional communications. The aspects of the expression of rages and sorrows in Pansori works are as follows. There are cases where a righteous rage is frustrated by the opponent and hence is changed into a sorrow, where one cannot help just being in sorrow in a situation in which no reaction is possible as he/she has been overwhelmed by invisible force, and where sorrows and rages are entangled and then even developed into laughing stocks. However, in any case, rages and sorrows originated from the pain generated by the frustration that the characters who try to live as humans have undergone with their minimal wishes. Their rages and sorrows are a way of responding to the undue treatment and the cold world on their own and are the declaration of self‐respect by the lower class. Such emotional communications comprise a process in which they don’t make others’ pain strange and do embrace the pain within their community while realizing and internalizing human dignity. For the receivers of Pansori in each period, the communication of rages and sorrows comprised a process in which they extended their ability to communicate with the world as aesthetic subjects.
