ABSTRACT

This paper examined new aspects of North Korea defection Diaspora literature that appeared in Lee Eung-Jun's 『Private Life of a Nation』 and Kang Hui-Jin's 『Phantom』. For that, the descriptive structure of text was divided into a surface layer and a in-depth layer and analyzed. The narration of a surface layer which positively accepts descriptive norms of the popular genre relativizes the seriousness and solemnity, contributing to escaping freely and cheerfully from the fiction of the dominant discourse parasitic on the separated system. In the meanwhile, the in-depth structure working on the other side effectively acts in frankly looking into the existence of North Korea defection by penetrating the reality of the separated system imbued with despair and disillusionment through epic of identity search. 『Private Life of a Nation』 and 『Phantom』 represents new sensitivity of young generations who figure the separated reality. Their narrative sense of identity escaping from the ideology and system goes over the solemnity and fair cry represented in the existing country-separated novels appropriate and implies new possibility going beyond country-separated literature. Especially, it is notable that they accepted a variety of genres of descriptive forms in their literary works and positively cope with the contradiction of the separated system. Also attention should be paid to the point that they appear North Korea defection Diaspora as the subject of description. Up to now, the works that figured the life of North Korean defectors were described centering around viewpoints of the observers. It can be said that North Korean defectors got to obtain their own subjective eyes in Lee Eung-Jun's and Kang Hui-Jin's works. The fact that the boundary between ‘we/they’ is strictly evaluated through their eyes and viewpoints can be said to be one of important turning points in North Korea defection Diaspora literature. Because they give testimony of the strict reality of North Korea in their voice, and also the aspects of corruption of South Korea capitalism. The above two works ultimately can be said to be text toward escaping from the separated system, which search an answer to 'How we should prepare for re-unification?', or 'How we should change to achieve the desirable re-unification?'. look into reality.
