ABSTRACT

This study was done in order to analyze the type of concept among 4 to 5 year-old children about ‘float or sink’ state. The tendency of young children’s concept, depending on their age and type of object used, was also analyzed. The subjects of this study were 60 young children(age 4 to 5) from 2 kindergartens in Chungcheongbuk-do area. Data was collected based on four types of activity and activity-based interviews selected by the researchers. Based on the results, young children’s responses could be categorized into 6 types of concept: ‘mentioning personal and unrelated comment,’ ‘mentioning unrelated physical cause,’ ‘mentioning unrelated and related physical cause,’ ‘mentioning related physical cause,’ ‘mentioning related physical cause and substance,’ and ‘mentioning relative comparison between physical causes.’ The most common type of concept was ‘mentioning related physical cause’ while ‘mentioning unrelated physical cause’ and ‘mentioning unrelated and related physical cause’ were second most common. Among 5 year-old children third most common response was ‘mentioning related physical cause and substance.’ On the other hand, ‘mentioning personal and unrelated comment’ was the third most common among 4 year-old children. Based on the type of object(size, weight, shape, and air) used, both 4 to 5 year-old children had ‘mentioning related physical cause’ as the most common type of concept when the ‘air’ factor was considered.
